About Petagogy

Established in June 2011 in the Shadyside neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Petagogy now owns two pet stores in Pittsburgh and Greensburg, Pennsylvania. The owners opened Petagogy with the goal of offering the best pet products on the market, and also to be a resource for their customers on the wide variety of healthy, fun and innovative products available to meet their pet’s individual needs.

Petagogy is an independently-owned local pet supply store that is operated by five humans and their many dogs. Where did they get that name? It comes from the word “pedagogy,” which is the art or profession of teaching. They pride themselves on learning about the best products out there, and they hope to pass that information on to their customers. The goal at Petagogy is to offer the quality products their customers know and trust, as well as to bring new products to the Pittsburgh market that weren’t previously available. They’re all about researching and finding the most unique, healthy and innovative products for their customers. They work closely with their suppliers and distributors and regularly attend pet expos and trade shows where they can talk directly to pet supply companies to get the low-down on new product offerings.

Services and Products at Petagogy

Petagogy team members love getting to know customers and their pets. Many of their customers have been shopping at their stores since day one. They’ve gotten to know them and their families and have been there when they bring their pets home, and in some cases have cried with them when they’ve had to say goodbye. They love making recommendations and then hearing that the products are working for them and their pets. Freeze-Dried Raw Dinner Patties were the first Stella & Chewy’s products Petagogy carried and remains their best-selling Stella & Chewy’s product line! It’s a staple for anyone who wants to boost the nutritional content of their pet’s meals and continues to be a great introduction to the raw category for many pet owners.

The Petagogy Greensburg location has a self-serve dog wash, as well as the “Backyard,” which features everything you need for your yard– bird houses, feeders and wild bird seed; bat and owl boxes, beekeeping supplies, wild flower seeds, beneficial bug homes and much more. They also host various events throughout the year, including monthly nail trim clinics, pet adoption events, pet vendor fairs, Yappy Hours and their famous Pet Photos with Santa.

Independent pet stores are integral members of their local pet community. Petagogy employees are trained and have backgrounds in pet care, veterinary care, and animal nutrition. They serve as experts for their customers and truly care about their pets and solving their problems. They take time to get to know their customers and their needs. They ask questions to get to the root of their concerns and do what they can to help. You don’t get these experiences and relationships from shopping online or in big box stores.

Petagogy strives to be active members of the animal, Pittsburgh and Greensburg communities. They partner with and support many community organizations and rescue groups, including the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Greensburg Project, Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh, Wayward Whisker’s Animal Rescue, The Foster Farm, Senior Hearts Rescue & Renewal, Westmoreland County Animal Response Team (CART) and Biggies Bullies just to name a few, with food drives, donation events, supply drives, gift basket donations and sponsorships. They also participate in many events hosted by these organizations all over the city.
