Seeking Better: New Year’s Resolutions for Dogs, Cats, and You

New decade, new you! The start of the new year is a great time to think about how you can better yourself and enhance your well-being, but it’s also important to have the same considerations for your pet! We’ve shared some New Year’s resolutions for dogs, cats, and pet parents to start 2020 off on the right foot (and paw).

Nutrition: What we put into our bodies is extremely important as it’s what fuels us. A healthy, appropriately balanced diet is crucial to your energy level, physical health, digestion, and more. The same goes for your pet!

Seek minimally processed foods: The more nutritional value, the better. Overly processed foods lose many of their nutrients, while those less processed keep important properties that benefit you and your pet. For both cats and dogs, a frozen raw or freeze-dried raw diet is a great option to consider as it mirrors their ancestral diet and leads to gentler, more efficient digestion with a variety of other whole body benefits. If you’re looking for a more convenient or economical option, consider a kibble that is baked at a lower temperature, like our gently oven-baked Raw Coated and Raw Blend Kibble options for dogs.

Eat healthier: You don’t have to commit all the way all at once, but consider starting with adding more fresh fruit or vegetables to your snack routine, or skip your next sugary soda for water or an iced tea. Your body will thank you later! For your pet, incorporating raw into their current diet can be very beneficial to many aspects of their health. Stella & Chewy’s makes it easy to add a raw boost with products like freeze-dried raw Meal Mixers.

Stay hydrated: Drinking water might sound like a no-brainer, but if you start to keep track of how much you’re drinking throughout the day, you may realize that you are not staying properly hydrated. Bring a reusable water bottle to work that you can fill up throughout the day. For pets, make sure they always have ample fresh water available to them, and consider something like a water fountain if you have a cat, which can be more enticing than a bowl. Another easy way to add moisture to your pet’s diet is to add a wet food to the feeding routine or use broth as a topper.

Physical Health: You need to keep your body strong so you can enjoy many years of playtime and adventures with your pet!

Get active: Exercise can be more limited in the winter months depending on your location but there are so many ways to still stay active with your pet! Visit a dog-friendly yoga class, take advantage of warmer days with a long walk and find ways to play and interact with your pet through toys indoors.

Don’t forget your check up: It’s so important to schedule both your yearly doctor’s visit and your pet’s. A quick check up at the doctor’s or veterinarian’s office will offer you both peace of mind and ensure you have much more time left to spend together.

Mental Health: Keeping yourself mentally strong is just as important as keeping yourself physically fit. Keep your and your pet’s minds enriched, confident, and happy.

Focus on the positives: A new year can bring a lot of new worries but staying in a positive mindset and looking forward to all the great things to come is critical. Take things day by day and be sure to slow down and think about the things that bring you joy throughout the day, one of those being your pet!

Keep your mind busy: Mental stimulation is great for your health and easy to do. Instead of turning on the TV right away when you get home, choose to work a jigsaw puzzle, complete a daily word search, or engage your creative side with a coloring book. For your pet, there are many puzzle toys available to keep them active and busy.

Learn a new skill: You’re never too old to learn new tricks! If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do or a trick you wanted to teach your dog (or cat), there’s no better time than the present. Jump right in and go for it, whether it be learning how to embroider, playing a new instrument, or just cooking that new recipe you’ve had your eye on. For your pet, use high value all-natural treats to help train and learn something new, like roll over or hi-five!

Meet new people: Friendship is incredibly important to your mental and emotional well-being and there are endless ways to meet new people nowadays, both in-person and online. Next time you visit the dog park, make the effort to strike up a conversation with someone you see there often, or join a pet lover’s group on Facebook where there are others who appreciate seeing infinite photos of your pet sleeping.
