Plants to Avoid

Several common houseplants can be toxic to your pet if ingested. If you have these plants, be sure to keep them out of reach to prevent accidental ingestion.

Boston Ferns

Boston ferns (Nephrolepis exalta bostoniensis) are one of the most well known safe houseplants for pets. They are a wonderfully vibrant houseplant that enjoy bright, indirect light and humidity. They do well as a hanging plant, which keeps them out of your pet’s reach and are safe if accidentally consumed.

Pilea Peperomioides

These funky round leaves are a distinct feature of the Pilea Peperomioides (also known as the Chinese Money Plant or UFO Plant). The Pilea Peperomioides is an adorable and safe addition to any pet-friendly household.

Blue Echeveria

Like many succulent species, the Blue Echeveria (Echeveria glauca) is a fantastic plant for pet parents. They are great for first-time plant owners as they are low-maintenance and drought resistant.

True Palms

Palms are perfect for pet parents looking to add a larger, leafy plant to their home. Some great palm options are the Areca palm (Dypsis lutescens) and the Parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans). Be sure to avoid the Sago palm, which is part of the lily family and toxic to pets.

Spider Plants

Spider plants (Chlorophytum comosum) is a fun, leafy plant that survives in many conditions, making it great for inexperienced gardeners. The long leaves may be tempting for your pet to nibble. Fortunately, they are non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Sunflowers
