When Marie Moody’s dog Chewy was diagnosed with distemper in 1997, at age two, a vet suggested she start feeding him unprocessed foods. To comply, Moody, then a fashion sales rep, began mixing her own pot of meats, fruits and vegetables—the kind of food a dog would eat in the wild. Chewy made a remarkable recovery, and Moody started wondering if her homemade mix could be marketed as healthy dog food. Finally, in 2003, after deciding “I have nothing to lose,” she paid a factory in Wisconsin to manufacture and freeze an initial 1,000-pound batch.

I caught up with Marie Moody at Chicago’s H H Backer Christmas Pet Product Show last week, and that’s not an easy thing to do these days! This has been a busy and likely landmark year for the Founder and President of Stella & Chewy’s, the first raw pet food company to come up with a process that ensures their products are pathogen free (salmonella and e. coli).

Small Business
Marie Moody's career went to the dogs. Specifically, to two pooches: Stella, a terrier blend, and Chewy, an Airedale-Shar-Pei mix. Stella and Chewy led this fashion rep to leave the world of design and start her own dog food company. "I started doing a lot of research, and it made perfect sense," says Moody, 42. "Animals don't cook for themselves."

Cold Raw Facts
The more I've learned about the meat used in pet food, the more I've come to admire commercially produced frozen raw diets for dogs. The meat and poultry used in most of these diets are far fresher and more wholesome-far more like what most of us would think of as "meat" - than most animal protein ingredients in dry (or even canned) pet foods. Stella & Chewy's is included in the list of top-quality products along with the article.
